Thank you Dawn and Ann! The beak is like..hmm..not as hard as a hookbill, doesn't have the crushing blow, but does have the serrated edge. He can pinch hard and twist. He is a really cool bird.

He is gorgeous! What does his diet consist of Carole please? do they need the same food as our other parrots or is it specialised at all?

Hi Ann, Aracaris and Toucans are prone to iron storage disease{hemachromatosis} so low iron foods are important, as well as low vit C, because the C makes the body pull and store what iron is in the foods. So he gets a special low iron pellet for softbills, and fruits like banana,blueberries,raspberries,blackberries,apple,pear,red grapes,papaya...

Carole, I was interested in the list of fruits in your post. Can they have white grapes or just red? Do you take the seeds out of the grapes? Can they have strawberries? Are the seeds in raspberries okay? Are there any veggies they can eat?

Hello Lorli. Since you have 20+ posts we can send pms. Shoot me your e-mail in a pm and I will send you a list. Yes white grapes are ok. I use seedless grapes, so no issue there. I do think I would if it was my only option. The berries you listed are fine. Same goes for papaya seeds. I would rather remove them than risk impaction. Let's remember too though, there is no one in the jungle with a cutting board and a knife waiting to cut up their fruit. They aren't stupid. But if they ran out of fruit in their bowl would they go after unwanted seeds? I rather play it safe. I limit veggies to an occasional piece of romaine, a little carrot or a couple peas. Again think iron=dark leafy greens and many veggies have high levels so you do need to be cautious. It seems he just has more fun ripping these up than actually eating too much of them.
