Hi everyone ! Please read, as this is urgent.

I have a sweet little 11 year old budgie, who was healthy her entire life until the start of this year when she started to develop a lump.... which very rapidly grew very big. She also very rapidly went from being “normal” to having splayed legs, losing most of her flight feathers, and just generally looking not so good.

I’ve been to the vet lots of times, tried different medications etc, and he’s been back and forth about surgery.

However, my biggest fear has finally come true - this lump, which is on her underbelly, has started to obstruct her vent. She can’t poop. I have to manually help her. I called the vet and he recommended to add a certain brand of human laxative, or vegetable oil, to her feed to see if it helps her, then we’ll reconsider surgery again.

She’s in a bad state - can’t fly, her legs and toes are a wreck, she can’t clean her rump - but she’s still active, chirpy, eats and drinks, etc. So I don’t want to give up on her.

I am urgently seeking advice about adding something safe to her food as a laxative for today, as I can’t get out to a shop to buy something specific until tomorrow.

The only oil I have at home right now is cooking oil, “Crisp’n’Dry”, ingredients: Rapeseed Oil, di-menthyl polysiloxane (E900)

Would adding a small amount of this be safe? I’m not sure if she’ll even try it, but she isn’t passing ANYTHING without my help, so I really want to see if this will allow her to do it on her own at least until we can organise surgery.

Thank you so much for your advice. I’m so worried for her. I just upgraded her cage again today to address another of her disabilities, and was hoping finally she has a set up which is 100% suitable for her needs, and now this....

If you don't have an Avian Vet, maybe your vet can get a phone consultation with one to help? I am so sorry your little girl is having to go through this. Stay strong. :sadhug2:

Thank you mods for moving my thread.

I live in a very small country with only one avian vet, who will be in work again tomorrow for a few hours. I spoke to his colleague who is not an avian or exotics specialist but does have a experience with avian issues. No matter what, there’s no chance of me being able to go in for surgery for a few days, if it’s an option at all.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this oil would be safe for my bird to help check if laxatives will aid her at all?

I have no clue. This may be a long shot, but maybe reach out to the hospital I use here in Florida? Here's their email: exoticbirdhospital@gmail.com

Do your best to explain what's going on and see if they know what's safe as far as oils and such.
