Vet called.

Bloodwork pristine. No elevated kidney or liver values.

UW Madison reviewed her films, no egg and kidneys appear normal in size.

Slight arthritis in her joints, bone density is less than normal but normal for her age.

Suspect soft tissue injury causing the inflammation seen. Inflammation pushing on her sciatic nerve.

Treatment gabapentin and metacam daily. If after 7-10 days no improvement is seen a CT will rule out tumor or infringement the xray had missed.

So.... Sakie is on vacation... Maui is going back to work.

Well that sounds like the best of a lot of bad choices so she should get better with time if nothing else shows up. She certainly looks happy in the pictures with dad. Nerd bird had a mystery mass the vets were worried about when he was alive but we decided to just watch it and it never changed and he just continued being Nerd so decided it was scar tissue/old injury and he never had issues with it.

Hey Sarah, if you don't mind me asking, what is the dosage amount on the gabapentin? Lou ( military) was about 63 when he developed nerve issues.

Sending loads of wishes for Sakie to have a speedy recovery, and hoping the drugs do the trick.
Sakie is the most gorgeous military macaw ever.

I just went through something similar with my dog Bits. Treatment was gabapentin and metacam too. Took a little longer than I was thinking it would take for him to get back to normal. But happily he is very much back to normal now. I wish the same recovery for Sakie  :hug8:

Love the pictures of her too. She's definitely a good looking Macaw:heart::xflove:

Thoughts and prayers...although Giggie presented the same with her eggs and the one Julip had, Dr. O didn't tell me she was really worried because she did not think it was an egg. :hug8::hug8::hug8:

That's good news. I wonder how in the world Saki caused that much soft tissue damage? She must have fallen from her perch? Gabapentin and Metacam did a very good job on Jasper's arthritis pain for a long time. Now it's Gabapentin and Celebrex - Celebrex is an NSAID too.

Hope she heals soon and well.

Hey mary, you'd be surprised sometimes at how they get soft tissue damage.
When Lou was alive ( my military) at around 63, he went to fly across room and family room (we had a huge house, 3000 square ft.) He suddenly folded wings and crashed hard into chair.
Took him to vet, vet said it was like having
" Charlie horse" in its wing, like we get in our calf...so yea they can get bruised up at that age believe it or not. Put him on meds for a while, he didn't fly much after that, shook him up a bit I suppose, but he was just shy of 70 when he passed.

0.2ml x2 daily. I have to check the concentration if you need more then that.

I saw nothing on camera so I'm hesitant to believe injury but... all I can do is wait and see. Bloodwork looks great for her age, I'm told. They haven't sent it to me yet.
