No photos, but this is a good story to tell.

Neptune was courting Picard fiercely. Wiggle wiggle wiggle...Picard is also excitable at the moment. Lots of hormones in my house right now.

Well Picard got angry and bit into Neptune's open mouth.

Neptune started bleeding. He looked like a parrotlet eating a raspberry, except his own blood.

I was very panicked and of course now they wanted to fight also. So I needed to intervene and Neptune bit my finger harder than ever before. I was bleeding in two places. Poor Neptune... I would be frustrated too.

Everyone is safe and fine. Neptune is being closely monitored. He seems to be feeling much better. This whole chaos was about 1.5 hours ago.

These are two parrotlets that were in a shared common area, they have known each other since they were babies. They normally interact positively. This is just a build up from sexual birds getting overly stimulated.

What will I do differently. I will reduce mid day play between the two of them. Very sexy time of day...

They sleep 12h at the moment so not much I can change there. We will get through this as a flock. Patience.

I just wanted to help explain that parrotlets are very sexual birds. Do not be mislead by their tiny selves. They can lose themselves to their hormones and get aroused and start courting or fighting. Please house them accordingly.

Do they have something to ¨play¨ with in their cages?
It might be worth supplying them with something as it will release some tension.

They each have a suitable cage. I load them up with branches, bark and leaves. They also have a suspended sphere type toy. I think sending a picture will explain the set up best. Will do that once it is daylight again here.

They are very active little guys. Always on go go go mode. I do not feel as though they arent getting enough play. They just don't know what to do with all their hormones. These boys are at that age.

More to come :)

I mean something to masturbate with. Sorry, I was trying to say it in a very PG way.

My Syndey likes the boing, Jaimes used to use a cotton perch before Aldora joined us. I hear other bird owners offer a stuffed toy (with no loose parts).

Lol! Awe poor Neptune needs a sex toy!

He doesn't have any cotton toys presently. Maybe I could get him some poor unexpecting plush toy similar to him in size. Do you think there are any psychological down sides? Does Sydney get more possessive of his boing?

I really don´t know.
@JLcribber could know something.

Does Sydney get more possessive of his boing?
No. I take it away and clean it and put it back with no issues. Sydney isn´t possessive of any of his/her toys/perches. Not even the beloved rubber duckie who s/he feeds.
Jaime didn´t get possessive over his perch either.

I´m not sure if other peoples birds get possessive over their ¨chosen¨object.

These are two parrotlets that were in a shared common area, they have known each other since they were babies. They normally interact positively. This is just a build up from sexual birds getting overly stimulated.

This is a pretty big factor. If they are siblings or just grew as siblings then neither one is a proper/suitable mate for the other and they know that. Now that they are both mature adults this is becoming a problem. Naturally.

Do you think there are any psychological down sides?
To masturbating? This an animal acting upon an instinctive "urge" that it has no control over. This is a release. The alternative is stress and frustration. The answer seems clear enough to me.

I'm positive it will not cause blindness. :D

Thank you for the responses. I do understand that this was a bound to happen boyhood moment for these guys. This is why they have their own cages and the common area is the only play area they interact together.

I read so many posts from people who keep parrotlets in cages with other species and/or too small of cages for multiple parrotlets. I read response to my post that state, "They are so sweet. They are best friends. They would never hurt each other...etc" This post was to try to point out an honest parrotlet behaviour. They will not always be little easy babies, they grow up. These boys have known each other since they were very young and they are not immune to this natural process.

For more on Sibling behaviour in spectacled parrotlets, which are close relatives to Pacific Parrotlets follow this link .

In regards to masturbation, I am not against that in the least. I know it will not cause blindness... Come on now! :p:roflmao::confused:

I mean parrotlets can get possessive of the most random stuff... if teddy the sex toy becomes an object of Neptune's desire...what is the worst side effect? These lovely sassy fluffy bird can pluck, I DO NOT want to make him a sad mess when teddy is missing or in the wash.

Lets see how sexy he thinks lobsters are. They were smallish, and I think they will sit more stably on his mid level platform. I am not sure which colour he will want, there weren't blue ones. But I can always buy a clone if I need to. My vote is on green.

They are the cutest little toys :D (I secretly want one!)

Cut the little black (moustache?) thing off, it is a little loop string.
Adelies bedtime buddy/baby comforter is a similar shape (It is a blue whale), I cut the label off so it wouldn´t fray.

Lol, I would say green too... I don´t know why, gut feeling :roflmao: Place both in and let him decide. Hopefully he likes them and it works :)

Yep I did cut off the tag and loop, both are in there. He was really very cute about looking at them but didn't really walked on them yet.

I will keep you posted!

Update on lobster love.

So Picard claimed the green lobster and had his way with him today.

Neptune seemed keen on yellow lobster, but I haven't witnessed anything as intimate yet.

Once your bird has done it once, you will see them return to the same toy whenever they get the urge.

Oh. My. Goodness. So glad I finally had the time to read through this. What an eye opener. Luckily, my mother in law bought Paulie a stuffed and a rubber duck to keep him company. I pulled them out of his cage 1) to change his set up and 2) because I had read it was best to avoid such toys to keep them from getting sexually possessive.
