An Elegant Trogan?
The Elegant Trogan - Nemesis Bird No More!
You almost have to go to Mexico for this bird, but only if you want to see one the easy way.
They also nest in Southeastern Arizona or on occasion in other parts of the US very near to Mexico. So if you are lucky you could wait to hear about where a pair might be nesting in the summer months in the US. Then you could go and pretty reliably see them there in the mountains going about their business. That would be the easy way to see them in the United States.
Then there is my way to do it...
Every time you happen to be in South Texas or Southeastern Arizona you could look for reports of Trogons who are bouncing about in the forests during spring. Not yet finding a mate, not yet settling down into a particular spot. One day he's up the canyon, the next day down the canyon, or over in a particular wash, another day he's no where to be seen. The key is that the Trogan is never in the same place as you are. You could do this for years at various locations and at all sorts of times making repeated visits never showing up in the right time or place.
That is until one day you get it right! Even the hard way eventually works out.
It was truly a thrill to see this bird. He even stuck around for the photo shoot. He is a jewel from the front, back and side.
