Hey there! Where do you guys recommended getting your seeds for sprouting from? I have green cheeks and am trying to figure out which ones I should start with...

Thanks!

I switch around. I've liked the various specialty bird mixes at Sprout people, and also have liked China Prairie.
one more is TOPS has 2 different soak/sprout. either would work for GCCS, read the ingredients and decide which they'd like best.

I get all of my supplies (seeds, sprouter) at The Sprout People. Their mix, Amber Waves, is also a favorite at my house!

Sproutpeople.org has some great mixes that are well received here.

Tops - All-in-one seed mix is my favorite for the price. I order online. They have a high sprout rate, I've been using it for about 3 years now, and my birds enjoy it :] Especially my cockatiel, she loves it. I've had success with Hagens bird seed mix as well, they sell them in a store nearby sometimes.

I would have tried sproutpeople - but their shipping price to Canada was insane, like $40 or $60 .

Commercial is the way to go with sprouts and sprouting. As you know what you are dealing with.

Just keep in mind read what is in there and, then consider what you have available around you.
There are so many other seeds and grains you can add to your mix.
I buy my items from a number of different places, My process takes a little more effort.
But still under way under what time I spend prepping their other foods.
My mix I like to try and keep at around 30 different types in it.
Things can vary as some are seasonal.

Adzuki beans
Amaranth
Barley
Blue Peas
Black Sesame seeds
Black Rice
Buckwheat.
Brown Rice.
Canary Seed.
Chai (Please refer to my notes)
Chick Peas (Garbanzo beans)
Corn kernels
Flax (Please read my notes)
Garbanzo beans (Chick Peas)
Grass seeds (Make sure they are untreated or coated)
Lentils (All are good)
Maple Peas
Maw
Maize
Millet
Mung beans
Mustard seed
Nigar
Oats
Panicum (Millet)
Pharlis
Pumpkin seeds
Quinoa
Radish
Rape seeds
Rice (wild or natural) not white rice.
Rye
Sesame seeds
Short grain brown rice
Spelt
Sunflower seeds
Safflower seeds
Teff
Wheat
Wild Rice.
And I can buy weed seed mix here. That I sprout. Also a wild bird seed mix that sprouts well.
Grains
  • Millet
  • Quinoa
  • Amaranth
  • Whole Oats
  • Barley
  • Spelt or Kamut
  • Teff
  • Brown Rice
  • Wild Rice
  • Buckwheat
  • Chai. (Chai does seem to make water go funny) So I do not add to my mix.
Mung Beans Vitamins A, B, C and E Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium Amino Acids Protein: 20%
Adzuki Beans: Vitamins A, B, C and E High in Calcium, Iron, Niacin All Essential Amino Acids except Tryptophan Protein: 25%
Buckwheat Groat Sprouts: Vitamins A, B, C and E Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Niacin, Phosphorus, Potassium Amino Acids Protein: 15%
Wheat: Vitamins B, C and E Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus Amino Acids Protein: 15% Brown Rice Vitamins B, C and E Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus Amino Acids Protein: 15%
The above is a guide. Not complete by any means. There are many other things that will sprout.
WARNING: Some beans are not suitable. This is a little complicated, so please check before using any of them. Exceptions: Mung Beans, Adzuki. All others I would avoid. This includes Soy beans.

@clawnz you might enjoy reading this sprouting mix guide from my budgie's breeder.
She gives it as a list of categories and says choose 2 from here, 1 from here, etc to get " The weighted ratio I typically aim for in the total mix is roughly 50-60% grains, 20-25% legumes (peas, beans, lentils), 8-12% herb seeds, and 8-12% oil seeds."
her notes on seed quality were also a big help to this once-newbie sprouter!

I'm curious if your birds will eat flax? It's only function as far as I can see it is to stick to beaks when they are trying to eat other stuff and then they scrape it off absolutely everywhere so that you must give the cage a thorough scraping to clean, along with sink, sprouter and everything else in the entire house.

Thank you for that. Excellent info.

No I do not sprout Fkax or Chia.
But do add to my seed mix now and then.
But this is after grinding it in a coffee grinder.

It has only ever turned my sprout mix to goop.
Yes I know there are ways to sort, but feel not worth the effort.
