Newbie question alert! I noticed something different with Buddy's beak. The tip seems to be chipped. Is this what it looks like when it's growing? Is it normal?

Is that black his nail in the background or his beak?

If that black in the background is his nail, You can get the vet to file his beak a little so it´s not jagged.
If the black bit is his beak, it´s fine, albeit a bit long.

Have you anything in the cage for filing nails and beak? My lovebirds all take care of themselves, I have a Hagen perch, I´ll link it, maybe you can find them near you?

I'm no vet, but it looks fine to me. Beaks are like nails and they keep growing and chipping as birds go about their business of chomping food and chewing toys. But keep an eye on it should it look too abnormal.

The black is the tip of his beak. He has a cuttlebone, but I haven't seen him use it yet! He doesn't have a pedi-perch. The neighboring island sells some supplies and they have one on order for me. He has one toenail on each foot. For those who didn't see my first post, Buddy was rescued from a pet store by his 1st owner b/c she saw him in a small cage with other lovebird species. They had bitten his toes off! He has one left on each foot. Fortunately he has enough left that he can still climb and hang on to the sides of his cage.

The black is the tip of his beak. He has a cuttlebone, but I haven't seen him use it yet!

Cuttle bone wont do anything. It's too soft, cuttle bone is just a poor calcium source. Its not meant to help with beak growth.

Cuttlebone is pretty rubbish to be honest. You can easily just skip on it all together.
Great that you have ordered the perch He´ll file his beak down on it on his own.

Great. Remember the smooth bit faces up so it touches your birds feet.
Don´t make this the highest perch, it´s not good to sleep on

Just a little extra note: my vet told me if they ever get a rough spot on their beak you can put a small amount of orthodontic wax (kind for braces - in dental aisle). Beebee keeps his in good shape on his “rough” perch. So sorry about your babies toes .

He has smoothed it right down now! Zara, you said to keep the smooth side up. This one doesn't seem to have a smooth side.

Glad he´s sorted his beak.
That perch is not like mine. I have the link to mine in my first post, they are by the brand Hagen or Living World and are avail on Amazon. I don´t know if the one you have there is good.
