How devastating! That poor woman and her bird. :sad1:
I've never used a cage that opened on the top like, but I suspect this issue wouldn't be exclusive to just that build. Seems it would be a danger presented with any convertible playtop.

It is identical to half of our girls' new A&E cage, right down to the latch. I'm surprised he was able to open it from the inside. We don't use that door either because the latch is too hard to move.

Poor baby; I'm sorry for him and his owner finding him like that. :( Impossible not to blame yourself even though she could not have known.

That poor bird and owner, how awful.
I am pretty sure that is one of the cages that I looked at and did not buy because of the way the top opens.......I was concerned about that exact thing happening. The one I looked at was a knock off of a decent brand and they are made in China in mass production lines and then boxed for the EZYDEAL Australia group/company. I wonder if this is the decent brand the knock off was modeled from or if it is one of the fakes like the ones I saw. I am so glad I was not happy or comfortable with the top part and did not buy one, the guy at the shop told me I could just not use it or cable tie it closed....he really tried to get me to buy one. I waited a few weeks and I got double macaw cages instead.....two of them in the hopes I could join them back to back safely.

How sad and horrible to come home to. :sorrow: Maybe people with a cage like that could zip tie the top closed in several places just in case.

I guess they could be drilled and screwed closed for better security, that is what I would be doing if that was the sort of cage I had.

If my memory serves me correct, this type of accident has happened a number of times, killing the birds or injured enough to be euthanized. Avoid the cages that can be opened, or drill and bolt together using stainless steel nuts and bolts. Sad for the victims.

Poor bird and owner - honestly, the cage company should have seen that coming... I feel so badly for her.
