Woke up at 5 as usual. Let Birdies out on cage top for breakfast. Went for coffee, came back to find them mating vigorously again.

Last two days Cha Cha has been trying to eat the plaster off the walls. I assumed she was a little calcium depleted.
But no.
She is already planning more eggs.

With a three week old baby in the nest?

What do you think about re-commencement of mating?. I strongly suspect Cha Cha will abandon the baby and lay again?

Maybe she's making up for lost time?

Do you think she is going to lay another clutch?

I do not breed caiques. However I have smaller birds that do this right at the 3 week mark, so by 4 weeks they’ve got another nest. The hen sits on the eggs and the male cares for the babies. IMO it’s hard on the hens’ bodies (calcium and all that). But some of ‘em, you just can’t stop them.

Hope this helps.

Woke up this morning. Let birdies out on cagetop for breakfast. But it wasnt food they wanted...... Instant mating.

Then they had a leisurely breakfast while baby SCREAMED for food, and they ignored him.

Then the mating began again.

Finally I racked and pulled the baby for handfeeding. His crop was almost empty ( as you'd expect at 6am)

But the parents are clearly ready ( or almost ready) to start a new clutch, and I will be gone at work all day

Lesser of two evils. T he baby is now at work with me in an incubator

All the girls at work fighting to see who will be the new stepmother lol

Yes I saw the hen was calcium deficient. She had begun pecking at the wall plaster when she was let out

So I spoke to Laurie, who reeds caiques, and her advice was to pull teh chick. Too high a risk of abandonment

The issue here is the caique chick at 3 weeks has no feathers. If she is a week away from laying eggs, that chick is nowhere near ready to leave the nest

Yikes. You’re right. Good that you pulled him.

Wonder what they do in the wild? Shove the baby out of the nest?

Ahww he has grown so much! cutie! I am sorry ChaCha stopped being a good mom, but at least you could step in!
I have no idea what would happen in the wild.. Maybe it doesn’t happen aan much there? I assume Tanya is right and they would push the chick out? I would love to learn more about these things!

Well he/she is a cute little dinosaur. I love his/her Gonzo beak.

Almost as cute as Thumper Fuzz Butt was.

Well The Great Gonzo is eating well off a spoon and the parents don't seem to miss him at all. They were out playing this evening. All carefree and happy. Surfing all over me.

So much for Papas guilt lol

Isn't that what Opapas are for? Taking care of the baby while Mum & Dad have (yet another) date night?
