Meet Riley! He or she is a little White-bellied Caique who hatched in the brooder. His mom neglected some of his siblings and he was the only egg left to hatch and she wasn't being very attentive.
He (we will call him a he until we get the DNA back) had already pipped his egg but still had about 36 hours to go before hatching. So I set up the brooder and kept watch.
We could hear him peeping inside the egg which means he had already transitioned to breathing air and was on his way to hatching. Did it ever seem like he was taking his sweet old time!
As it turns out all went well and he hatched on Monday, October 15th.
He thinks the green fluff is is Mommy. It is for him to cuddle with.
Today in the brooder. He gained 2 grams so far. He is six days old.
He is so cute!
