As some of you know, I recently purchased two proven pairs of linnies with the intent to breed them. One pair immediately got to work and laid 7 eggs. Well, the first chick hatched today. It's pink, the size of a thumbtack, and makes an adorable noise that turns my heart to mush. So happy!! Stay tuned for updates.

I hope the babies are healthy and you find good homes. I am in Maryland but cannot have more birds due to lack of space.

These are responsible pairs genetically speaking, good parents. I have a brooder and handfeeding equipment. And linnies are pretty rare in my area.

Some people will always oppose breeding even though, again a dog analogy, discouraging EVERYONE from breeding would result in only the back yard breeder type dogs and none of the champions. Because it is the sensitive, caring people (the champion breeders) who are persuaded, and the byb don’t care.

I commend you for choosing a great species and one that is highly sought after. Good luck with your babies. PICTURES please! :)

How is the new family today? How is the baby doing? How are you doing?

Thanks for asking!! All is well, baby is doing well and had a full crop last I checked. No other egg has hatched yet. They were laid 1 day apart, so I assume that's (more or less) how they'll hatch.

That is the way they will probably hatch - one day apart. I'm glad that the baby seems to be doing well.
I'm not a breeder so I enjoy hearing about others that are.

Is this normal? When I checked the baby seemed to be throwing itself around. This chick was born either today or yesterday, btw.

I know it's probably fine, but I'm just nervous as this is my first time. Also: as far as nest checks go, how much is too much? I'm on vacation from work rn and I find myself fighting the urge to peek in all the time.
