Hi, I am adopting an untamed Goffin Cockatoo tomorrow. I've been visiting him and he is very sweet. He loves head rubs and can say "Hi". He is timid when his cage is opened. I'm hoping he will relax when I get him away from the noisy environment his is in right now. Any advice on how to get him to relax is appreciated!

Welcome and congratulations! :greet7:
Put his cage where he can watch the most activity while also being out of the way so he feels safe. If he needs more security you can try covering the back half of his cage. Let him decide when he's ready to interact and come out. I bet he'll warm up fairly quickly -such curious little buggers. :heart2: Plus you've been visiting him so it will help that he has a familiar face. :) And he already lets you rub his head? Sounds like he's off to a good start with you already. Best of luck with your guy & I look forward to your posts and pics of him!

Welcome! I think the key with any new bird is to take things slowly and go at his/her pace, be patient. If you've been visiting he may already feel at ease in your presence, but new surroundings might make him more hesitant. Can't wait to see photos! :)

Welcome to AA. A Goffin's.....well have fun. :D Just be aware (and maybe you already know this) that they are excellent escape artists so make sure the his cage is escape proof. Check it once, twice, three times.
Do be patient with him and don't introduce too many things at once. Feed the same thing that he is already being fed and then introduce new foods. Follow his lead and don't force him to step up or come out of the cage. Sit next to the cage and talk to him or read to him. Sounds like he is willing to interact with people since he allows you to rub his head. That's a good start. Congrats!!
I have an @ 30 year old Goffin's.

Welcome and congrats on your soon to be new bird! I have had a goffin for about a year now. Goffins are super smart, super playful, little clowns. All the advice you've been given has been great. Just try to follow his lead. My goffin wanted out of his cage the second he got to our house. Some will take more time and prefer to stay in their cage while they get more comfortable with their surroundings. My goffin spent a good amount of time just hanging out on the top of his cage for the first few months we had him. As was already said, they are super escape artists. I still don't know how my too managed to unlock his cage from the inside. But he can. I have also found screws of his cage half unscrewed.... And always supervise when your bird is out. I have chunks of wood missing from things in my house because I wasn't vigilant.

I guess in a very strange way I should be grateful Luv Bug the Destroyer is happy with chewing everything in sight and hasn't started dismantling her cages. :nervous: Yet?
