I just realized that the cotton canvas vendor from Amazon is not far at all from me but they're closed already for today. So I'll just stop by in person to purchase so I can feel the thickness first. They have so many options

I may go ahead and order the cotton painter tarp for now and see how that goes,

and maybe put an old pair of my blue jeans on that corner of the couch until it arrives.

What about a piece of untreated leather

Those are some great ideas! Thank you!! I think I'm just going to get the cotton painters tarp first, because it's cheap, but if that doesn't work I will definitely look into the leather. And toys are great too, though the only thing he really plays with are weaving materials. But I can keep trying!
