I have a breeding pair of fiery shoulder conures and one of them died suddenly this afternoon. I was feeding the flock, and just as I filled the seed dish in the cage above, one of the fiery shoulders started screeching. I thought maybe it had caught a nail on the wire, but then it fell over onto its back and started to flutter its wings. I reached in and picked it up , and a minute later it was dead.
They haven't really been handled, but they aren't terrified of me. I talk to each pair when I feed them, and all of the birds come to the dishes before I'm even done with their cage. I try to feed at the same time each day to keep things consistent. I doubt I scared it to death. Each pair gets three bowls each day. Fresh seed and pellets, fresh veggies, and clean, cool water. I think they eat a pretty healthy diet, and their cages are big enough for them to fly. They aren't clipped either and the only time they are handled it to get their nails clipped when they need it.
Does this sound like a heart attack ?
