Things sound cautionably optimistic. Hooray, Ami!

She regurgitated this afternoon which scared us all so they did a fluoroscopy and everything is flowing as it should but her bowel is slow which is expected after the surgery and possibly because the egg is putting pressure on it. She's still not incredibly hungry so they are gavage feeding her and they are going to give her a little less now. I'll go see her again tomorrow morning because they feel it really makes a difference when she sees me. If I didn't have a million and one things I need to do I would sit there all day!

I saw her twice yesterday and she was eating whole blueberries on her own. Who knew she liked them so much?:). I always chop them up because they usually get thrown if I don't and she was going crazy for them! She didn't seem as clingy to me either, at least not until she realized I was leaving and then she had to come and sit on me and say goodbye.

I just got my morning update and she has started to eat with her feet but is still not eating much. She really hates the gavage feeding, so they're going to use a little sedation this evening when they feed her. I'm going to head over there in the early afternoon with some egg to see if I can entice her at all.

Did she eat some egg?
Nope, oddly enough, I chopped up some bell peppers and she went for that! I guess I've been doing the right thing all along. She never touched the egg or the noodles I brought along but went crazy for the raw bell peppers! I guess she also stole a cheese tortelini from one of the doctors who had her out when she (the doctor) was eating! LOL!

I just got back from seeing her today and she's perky and chatting and was letting me pet her. The egg inside her is a real issue though. It has to come out and it's not going to be an easy surgery. They will talk about when and how they will go about doing that tomorrow.

I'm curious. Is that egg stuck to the side wall or just giant? The usual procedure is to suck out the contents of the egg and then just collapse the egg inside through the cloaca. Then the hen will usually pass the shell within a few days.

John she wrote the egg is in the oviduct so it's like a tubal pregnancy in a human female. At least that is the way I understand it.

They still aren't completely sure where the egg is actually. They have been giving her fluids subcutaneously and feel that if she could lay the egg or if it was in a position where they could go in and drain it, that she would have laid it by now.

She's doing very well this morning and hamming it up with all the doctors and students. They are going to make a decision today on whether or not they will try to go back in on Thursday to get the egg or if they will give her several weeks to really heal before they try again. They want to talk to the soft tissue specialist team and see what they feel is the best thing to do. If they decide to do surgery again on Thursday, they will just keep her until then. If they decide to wait, they feel comfortable sending her home with me today. I will let everyone know what the final decision is.
