My sister's 1 year old poodle had my lovebird in his mouth for a few seconds before I managed to get her out. Should I go to the vet? Do you think it's serious?

Absolutely, get your bird to the vet. He may have internal injuries and dog saliva causes terrible infections in birds.

I hope you keep your bird away from any dogs, if he survives.

i do keep my bird away from my dog, it's just that my sister keeps letting her dog go around the house and he always comes to me

It's your bird, it's your responsibility to keep it safe. Regardless, get your bird to a vet - if you care anything about him.

Bird to vet immediately, hard rules with your sister and her dog from now on.

Even if your bird does not have any visible injuries that you 'see', there can be internal injuries. A vet visit is definitely a must...

And a serious talk with your sister and your parents if you still live at home. I am not an advocate for punishing the dog, its their nature, so not his fault, but if your bird is fine, for the future, make it known if the dog is allowed into a part of the house that is 'dog free' or the bird's area, physically remove the dog. Guessing a small poodle? So pick the little bugger up and drop him outside in the yard or into a crate if he has one. And tho I don't suggest physically hurting the dog, I wouldn't be upset to hear about you kicking your sister in the behind.

Glad to hear she is okay. Hopefully now your family can develop and adhere to strict rules for keeping the dog away from the bird.

Glad your bird is ok. Another member's ringneck was not so lucky recently.

You are responsible for your bird's safety. You owe it to them - it's part of being a responsible pet owner. You NEED to make sure the dog is secured or behind a closed door before you let your bird out of the cage. You are very, very lucky that your lovie is still with you.

So happy to hear your baby is going to be fine. I hope your sister will be helping to foot the vet bill, sometimes the best lessons are those that come from the pocket....

And knowing its a toy poodle, have a small carrier in a corner and if your sister allows him to run loose again, just pick him up gently and toss him in the carrier.... I was gonna suggest putting him in the fridge, but figured I might get yelled at for one :) sorry, I'm a smart aleck! just a great point that he doesn't belong in the refrigerator anymore then he belongs in the room with your bird.

But very happy for the positive ending.

You shocked me with that one for a moment :shocking: but it is a good point!

I'm a smart aleck... but honestly I'd be tempted... not like I'd leave him there for long, I'd tell her immediately where to find him :)

So very glad you took your bird to the vet and that she is okay. It only takes a second for something to happen between our furry and feathered pets and it's not the dogs fault as he was doing what comes natural to him. Strict rules must be put into effect, and adhered to, when your lovie is out of the cage. Good luck.
