It is hard to tell when they are very young but when my Mousebirds were about 4 months old I could tell by feeling their pubic bone. Males are very close together and females very wide apart. Also behavior as well. I have 2 males and one of my males Click dose the mouse bird jump on his perch to attract the females. Coco my other male just wants to bite the crap out of me all the time. Both my females Tweety and Chicken lay eggs every month, they also bite my husband (i think this must be some sort of mating thing Mousebirds do). Tweety lays 4 eggs about every 6 weeks and she then sits on them for a couple of weeks. Chicken lays her eggs and dosent bother with them.
The vet can also do a blood test to see if they are a boy or girl.
I have 4 Speckle Mousebird and each one of them have very different personalities.
My 2 males are very strongly bonded and will not do anything without the other. My females are also close but not like the males, they sit together all day preening each other if Tweety isn't sitting on eggs.
I love the way they share food among each other. If Tweety is out with me and I give her a raspberry she will eat a little, fly back to the cage then share the raspberry with the other 3.
