I have a young scarlet macaw who was fine three hours ago. When I went again to see him now I find a large hole on one side and flaking on the opposite side. No bleeding. Took peanuts from my hand and ate normally. Am scared. How can I contain this? We do not have any avian vets in the city.
To me that doesn't look good….Altho Beaks do continue to grow. I would at least call a avian vet and talk to them, send them a pic. I wonder how that happened… Good luck…...
Several years back there were two baby macaws and one got beak damage from the other. I don't know just how little/extensive the damage was but the breeder put tape on it (duct? masking? I am not sure what was used) but I did ask later on and found out the beak heal perfectly.
Duck tape might be worth a try,as mentioned above, as long as he doesn't try and remove it. Trick is keep it covered so no infection sets in. Hopefully bone will grow quickly.
There's no other similarly-sized birds in the same aviary? Or a anywhere he could stick his beak into an adjoining aviary? That looks suspiciously like a bite.
