Borax (borates) and washing soda (calcium carbonate) are just like any chemicals used as cleaners.

Good natural alternatives are vinegar or baking soda... just don't use them at the same time...:)

I thought I read Borox was poisonous to them? I use Dawn dish soap, water and white distilled vinegar to clean cages.

I would just use straight vinegar and water - I would be nervous about using borox. AviClean is a great cleaner but not a disinfectant. F10 is a great avian disinfectant.

I use vinegar water or diluted simple green, as well as baking soda.

Was curious about the simple green. Heard the latest reformulation is safer?

I use a mixture of organic grapefruit seed extract and water. I make the mix in an empty spray bottle and use that. I get it at my local health food store. I do about 30 drops of GSE to a standard sized spray bottle. I use this to clean my mirrors and other items and have never had a problem.
