I came across what I thought was a dead goose floating in a small reservoir by my house. As I got closer he came back to life. As I was watching and photographing him, I noticed another lying in the tall reeds around the reservoir. It was his mate on a nest. They weren't happy with me and my dog, but we both were very respectful and kept our distance.

I'm going to return and hopefully see the babies when they're hatched.

The drake did his best to show me how tough he was, and scare me away. The hen stayed hidden.

Love the photos. Is the water muddy?

It's always a rusty orange color. It's near an old abandoned mine, so I think it could be from that. Who knows though...it could just be a weird colored algae.

I think when they stretch out their necks like that they feel fear or threatened. Makes sense if the nest was close by.

Gorgeous pics Becky! I would bet the water has a clay bottom. That is what the ponds look like at our cabin and it is from the red clay

Where they mine there's lots of red rock and clay, so I think you may be right.

Thanks.

Great pics of the geese. The contrast in water color makes for a pleasing background.

(Nikon Guy)...... Just for laughs

Love wild geese Becky and those pictures are great. Just a wonder the male didn't take a run at you.

I really love the color of that reservoir. It's so intensely orange at times, you'd think I over saturated it.

The geese seem to like it too. There's several of these reservoirs in a row, quite small ones. This one has a mowed grass path around it, with a bench. I can't believe I've never seen a soul there.
