Another update on our precious Keikoa!

I'm not sure when I posted last, but this is what I think has happened since~

and a little bringing up to date with newbies?

Keikoa's issues started in November. The first notation I have on my
calendar is Nov.1st.

She had nasal discharge and lethargy. Treated for bacterial infection: antibiotics and
nasal flushes. Up and down, back and forth, we are well-known at Dr. LaBonde's office now!

Onward, she had a nasal fungus and then nasal granulomas, left-side swelling, which were
removed during a "light anesthetic" and she was on anti-fungal meds and flushes
and that has healed nicely, but then a swelling pooped up on the
opposite side. The area below the right eye was swollen, the eye had constant watering
and all along there has been nasal discharge, although a bit less.
Dr LaB took 4 swabs and started her on antibiotic again (Baytril), she has been on
Metacam all along, her area below the eye hurts and apparently itches, and I also
give her nose drops, eye drops (moistener) and Benedryl at night.

So now she is on Gentamycin drops, flush, the Baytril, Metacam, just finished the anti-fungal and actually, it is day 3 of the Baytril, and she is looking better.
We are cautiously optimistic.
The bacteria this time is Klebsiella and very bad if a pneumonia (I have read, scary!) but
Dr LaB sounded optimistic. And the swelling is less pronounced.
It is easy to despair. These creatures are so fragile, and Keikoa is our first
parrot, our baby, our funniest and sweetest bird.
She has saved our marriage several times, because who would get the bird?
Jim paid for her, but I fed her for 3 weeks at The African Grey, and I am, after all, The Mom!

I was happy to hear that our daughter, who isn't really a bird person, but loves animals,
respected the amount of time we have spent giving meds and agonizing over our baby.

So, fingers crossed and praying.....

Poor baby, it's so hard when you just can't get them well quickly. Praying you can get a handle on her problems, and get her back to a healthy sassy life.

A bird that can save a marriage...is a special one indeed. ;)

I love that: "knee mail"!!!
Great way to say it!

Well, another update~

Keikoa did very well, she was on Clavamox (?) for the Klebsiella infection, but
gradually, the swelling around her right eye and discharge came back, and it is so sad. I don't think
she can see out of that eye very well when it gets swollen.

She had another infection after that, it responded to Baytril, and Dr LaB also aspirated some of
the mucus from around the eye. The culture that time showed no bacteria or fungus....but in a few days the
swelling was back. :(
It has been swollen off and on, and finally this past weekend, it was really swollen and red.
So the vet is going to go in (surgery on the right now) and see if there is a hard bit of mucus
or even a pocket of bacteria that is keeping the sinus from draining.
Surgery is tomorrow.

Prayers going with her into surgery. I hope this fixes her problem. It's hard to see them sick for so long.

Keikoa is home, and looks great, all swelling down and just a line of stitches below her eye.
She was singing and eating as soon as we got home!
Dr LaB said he got a lot of hard bits of old mucous out, LOTS, and flushed and sent
samples to CSU. I know those hard pieces, chunks were causing a lot of pain as well as
the swelling.
I can't believe how quickly she recovered from the anesthesia and having surgery!
Of course, she's been there many times now, since November 1, so maybe it's not that
traumatic!

I hope she will keep getting better....
