My moms 4 year old male Canary might have a problem.
Since November up to know he has been loosing feathers, molting.
I thought given the weather we had in NY, it might be the heat in the house.
He is eating well, drinking the works, still looking feathers and not making a sound.
This guy never had this issue before, he does go through molting stages for like 2 months.

No changes in diet

What do you think

Sorry to hear about your canary.

How long do you have the lights on for him during the day? Canaries can be pushed into breeding mode when you increase their light time to 12-14 hours, but most breeders say that if they go to 15+ hours of light the birds are pushed into a molt. I did this mistake over spring break (when I stay up very late and leave the lights on) and now my male canary is molting like crazy.

Does he sing a lot when he's not molting?

I found some links that might be worth a read:

Unseasonable Molting

You may also want to look into the possibility of mites. Are there any new birds in the house that might have brought mites in?

I too was thinking the lights. If you stay up late + the sun rises earlier, then he might be getting too much light. Also, canaries usually don't sing when molting.

Thank you guys, the lights are on for about 12 hrs.
I will cut that down.
Before this he was signing like crazy.
From November till now, he has been losing feathers and not signing.
One other thing, my mom lives in an apartment building, and the apartment was very hot, when the heat was on during the winter.
I will go trough the articles and cut the lights down.
If it helps I can do low light in that area.

I also wanted to ask regarding seed food, I have been mixing Abba seeds, and he gets fresh fruits and vegetables daily, tried giving him the egg, but no luck..
During this period, should I do something different?
