continuing with the rescue...
This bird is little and isn't even able to break a popcycle stick. Will this get better after time or are they really that weak?

Secret couldn't do anything. Blue front Amazon. 2 years later is ripping through light weight stuff, basswood platform perch with bark on it, and some smaller pine stuff

Try balsa foot toys from I got a woody.....and some others like basswood, soft pine to start with

Just remember he has been through a lot in the past couple days. Poor diet and maybe even not knowing how to play may play a part. Try wicker and balsa as well as yucca chips. ;)

He can definitely shred a popsicle stick! They might be small but they're certainly strong enough for that. A WCP is about the same size as a WFA and Olive plows through popsicle sticks, 1/2" pine, etc.

Thank you so much. He does try to bite the sticks but it isn't working yet. :cool1:
They did trim his beak the other day at the vets - I don't know how long that takes to stop hurting either.
I will try the softer woods. Can I find them at the pet store?

Name change - someone has suggested Chris or Cringle since he is a holiday miracle. This morning I thought of Patches.

Go with the name that makes you happy and others think is cute because that sets the mood of how people react. Devil cat does not get the same response as names such as socks or honey.

I really like Patches. He is an individual bird with his own habits and fears right now. He may have never seen a popsicle stick before. Since his beak needed a trim he may have not even chewed on any toys or wood before. It is like starting over with a new baby.
You go patches.

I realize some of that. He likes the popsicle sticks. He tries to chew them.
I give him a sunflower seed or two when I go in his room now. One - to give him a treat and two - to make sure he has something to open with his beak. ;)
Since I know he likes sunflower seeds I feel like he will at least try harder to open one of them. It worked yesterday. I didn't notice today.
I am pleased with how is doing. It seems like though he will just get used to this room and then I will take him to another room that is much bigger and probably scarier since there will be another bird near him and three cats to watch :wideyed:

Try a pistachio. They love those. Make sure it has a break in it though. No salt of course

I willl do that. Thanks!
I have tried giving him things and he takes them but then he throws them right down. Usually it's a dehydrated fruit of some sort.

I was told at a bird store that a pistachio was like "crack" for an Amazon. While I didn't like the phrase that person used, my zons obviously love them.....and the senior nutriberries

I have all sorts of nutriberries at my house but I stopped trying to give them to any of my birds because the ones I was giving them to didn't see to like them. I, of course, have not tried them with Patches. I will have to buy Pistachios again because I gave bags of them away because my birds didn't like them either. Maybe it's the giver and not what is given. :p

My two didn't care for nutriberries either. There is something in the senior ones though they both like

Petco carries these and they are very soft:
Wesco Bird Kabob Toys - Bird Toys and Bird Treat Toys from petco.com

And I buy this bag of yucca chips for them to chew on:
Wesco Bird Kabob Yucca Parrot Chips Bird Toy Parts at PETCO

Here are the Lafebers Avi Cakes. They are softer.
Lafeber's Classic Avi-Cakes for Parrots at PETCO

And some more easy to play with toys:
Fetch-It Pets Polly Wanna Galactic Crunch Bird Toy at PETCO

I weave these in the cage bars:

I've got these too - so far he isn't playing with them.
The rest of them I will go and check out. I'm trying to wait until I go to the Lancaster Bird Expo in a couple of weeks though.

Lots of ideas here for Patches. Don't forget the pine nuts. This is a wonderful company to deal with We're NUTS for BIRDS! - Nuts.com In addition to quality nuts they offer a variety of good seeds like pumpkin, hemp, chia and milk thistle. :)
