Lea is such a beautiful bird and watching her coral feathers develop has been a game with me. I know watching the changes, slow as they are, in my Senegal, Sunshine, has been so much fun. When I first got her at three months old, she had rather thin orange areas on her chest on both sides of a deep green "V". Lots of yellow beside the orange, then lots of green down the lower belly all the way to the end of her bottom where the tail feathers sprout. At that young age, she only had an oblong of yellow feathers outlining her vent and it was because of those yellow feathers the breeder felt Sunny is a hen; she said hens have yellow around their vent and the yellow increases in amount every year. Cocks have green under the tail. The breeder was right. Now with Sunny 14 years old, her entire under bottom is bright yellow; no green at all except along the sides of her body and over her back. Her orange markings are wider on her chest, the green "V" shorter and smaller. Her eyes have changed from dull grey to silver to gold. I wonder every day what other changes I am going to get to see in her through our next thirty years together!

How much will the coral typical cover when she gets older?

Depends on each bird, really. I'll try to hunt down a picture of her mother. Some have more, some have less. Brown-heads are notorious for having more than Grey-heads and I think both of them have more than true Capes.

Below are two pictures of Léa's mom that I had gotten from her breeder.

First one is with a previous clutch, second one is with Léa's clutch.

Beautiful! I find the mother's coloring interesting, especially the second photo. It seems to show she has a partial "collar" of orange and yellow feathers. I haven't seen that coloration in that area before, although in other photos of older hens I often see "splashes" of the orange/yellow feathering on the wings. Kali has two small patches of this in matching areas on her wings.

I think she might have also plucked some feathers from that area to garner the nest.
