Confirmed vet appointment for 9:30 this Wednesday. For a wellness exam, blood panel and gram stain fecal it's almost $200. A disease panel runs over $400 - WHAT? Can I use Avian Biotech for the chlamydia and PBFD testing? :/
You can send samples to Veterinary Molecular Diagnostics, the testing is 20 for a psittacosis and 30 for PBFD. The vet will probably charge you shipping.

Really 200 for the exam, gram stains, and blood work is a good price. I would ask them where they send their disease tests out to and go from there. Clinics generally have their own protocol but some will draw/collect samples for you to send to a lab.

Thanks, I will check that out. Don't have an issue with the blood work and office visit fee, I've just never heard of disease testing that cost over $400. If there's a more economical way of getting that taken care of, and it sounds like there is, I would like to explore that option. :) Hoping his visit goes well and he's 100% healthy!

Thanks again for answering all of my questions, I appreciate it more than you guys know. :hug8:

Just got back from the vet. Probably one of the most stressful visits I've ever experienced. They had to draw blood from both legs because they weren't able to get a good enough pull from the first. He was so stressed out and unhappy. He wobbled across the table when they finally released him and was panting hard. I'm never one to feel guilty when I bring animals to the vet because I know it's in their best interest, but I felt SUPER horrible today. I haven't dealt with an avian vet in along time, so maybe my expectations are unreasonable, but I wasn't really impressed with this vet. I mentioned my concern over some blackening on the tips of his feathers, wasn't sure if it was from over-preening and/or the beginnings of stress bars, and he goes on to tell me about another Eclectus he sees who apparently has a ton of black feathers, especially along his back. They performed a slew of tests and everything came back fine, "so I'm not really concerned when I see black on feathers on Eclectus." Eh.... He also wanted to trim back his beak, which I thought would only add to his stress so I held off on that. I don't even know if it needs to be trimmed (I didn't think it needed it, then again I'm not an expert). I'll include a picture in this post for reference.

The vet asked me about his diet and I was honest with him. He seems super picky and the only thing he eats with exuberance is the small amount of healthy seeds I ration out for him. He also likes sprouts and will pick through the mash I made for him, but he doesn't eat anything raw. I've tried cutting veggies up into strips and chunks, mashing them, briefly warming them in the microwave. He just doesn't seem too impressed. He'll occasionally pick through some fresh berries. I purchased some dried flowers yesterday and he seemed somewhat enthused about them. The vet said his weight was good, I just don't know how that's possible when I compare the quantity of food he's eating now compared to his old home. He apparently ate 1/2 - 1 cup of food A MEAL, and he was fed 2-3 times a day. He doesn't eat anything close to that now.

On the bright side, he was very friendly with everyone at the vet's office. Even after they manhandled him, he allowed the vet to inspect the feathers along his back and perched on my finger like a good boy as they removed the bandage from his foot. He commented on how wonderful his temperament was, which was nice to hear. :)

I think his beak looks fine. Blackening on the tips of feathers can be normal. It is usually just where the feathers get rubbed or bumped often from daily activities. By the time they are noticeable it is usually time for them to molt. I don't know if it was already mentioned in this thread but you can get a scale and weigh him daily if you are a little concerned about the amount he is or isn't eating.

He is so handsome!! I just adore the boys!!

Your boy looks good and is in good shape. You have not mentioned anything of concern. I groomed birds for several years and his beak is just fine. They do chew wood so provide items to chew. My first piece of good furniture chewed was by my boy Ekkie Ricki! Rick passed a number of years ago from a liver tumor.

His beak really looks great. I'm surprised they didn't draw blood from the jugular though... I think blood draws from the leg are pretty old school. I will say if you're unhappy, find a different vet. It's very important to have a good rapport with the vet and the staff to help you take care of your kiddo.

Stress bars will form as the feather is growing, not after. That said, from what I can see of his feathers he looks like he's in really good shape. Maybe show a closer view of the feathers in question?

So pretty nervous right now. Bloodwork came back and he's saying certain values are abnormally high/low. He said he needs to contact a specialist to see if they are normal for Eclectus. I'm super worried. :(

Do you know which ones? A lot of imbalances can be corrected with diet. It is weird that the vet doesn't have reference ranges for the values though.

I didn't get to talk to him unfortunately, I missed the call and he left a message. He mentioned something about his bile acids being off and how we would need to start supplementing milk thistle seeds (which I already have). Not sure if it's more than that, said he would call me back Friday.

So his bile acids were the only thing off and they were at 165. He suggested placing him on Zupreem pellets and said he's getting too much "people food." :banghead: I explained he was getting things like fruits, veggies, brown rice, etc.... he gave me an example of a cockatoo that liked to eat cheese grits and how it wasn't healthy for him. How is this at all comparable to cheese grits? He wants me to supplement milk thistle liquid by mouth twice a day with a syringe. I asked him about adding organic milk thistle seeds to his diet instead because he loves them, and he said he wasn't sure if a "treat" would have enough of a concentrated dose to make a difference (even though I'm reading from lots of different sources that seed work well). BLAH! Slightly frustrated to say the least.
