That pandanus is very different to the pandanus we have in Australia. I used to feed the nut clusters to my Alexandrine when I was living in Darwin.

We picked a Pandanus fruit last Saturday. At that time, the fruit was not ripe and the seed pods were not loose. Today I picked it up to check, and I saw some of the seed pods were loosening. I pulled one, and a bunch fell off!

I thought I would show a photo of it. This one weighs more than 6 pounds! It will be a treat for many, many birds as there must be around 200 of the seed pods on it. Each pod has 3 to 4 little nuts inside that I understand are similar to pine nuts. So far, none of our birds have went so far as to chew through the husk to the seeds but they will, I am sure, given enough time. Until then, they sure do like eating the flesh and chewing the husk. The husk is very tough and fibrous. Even more so than palm nuts, I think. Anyway, here's a photo I took just a couple minutes ago to give those interested an idea of how it looks when ripe.
